I have had the honour of working with and getting to know the fabulous Suzanne Smith, the writer and inspiration behind Crazy Blonde Life and, I promise you, she is a dynamo with a big heart.

Suzanne is an inspiration in every way. A couple of years ago she launched CBL after a lifetime of looking after her family, and in her blog, she speaks from the heart about all things inspirational for 50+ women including fashion, change, spirituality, and living the best life you can in midlife with a big dose of honesty.

Today she shares with us her thoughts on a wide range of subjects so I will pass you over to Suzanne.

What inspired you to start your blog?

The seed was planted about 5 years ago when things started to change in my life in a big way. I had no idea what I was doing, but thought it would be fun to start a blog! I didn’t take it too seriously at first, but gradually decided that I wanted to be a successful (badass) blogger. It is great fun most of the time, but it’s also a lot of work and takes serious dedication!

You are a ‘renaissance woman’, you cook like a dream, are a yoga instructor, write beautifully and star in your own photos. What have been 5 things you learnt about life as a creative entrepreneur?

I think the number one thing I’ve learned is that I am completely responsible for my success.

Also, it sounds cheesy and so many people say it, but it is crucial to be authentic. People don’t want to hear you say what they want to hear, they want to know who you really are and how you feel, what you love…they want your honesty.

I work in some way every hour that I’m awake. If I’m not on my computer, I’m having pictures taken, editing pictures, cooking for a blog post, listening to a podcast, working my Instagram, Pinterest, and other social media or just thinking about what I want to blog about. This is not a hobby!

Patience is very important… I know that I will be successful because I want to be, but it takes time.

I’ve also learned that I can’t do everything myself, especially as Crazy Blonde Life has grown. I have to depend on other people to help me sometimes.

I adore your message to women about empowering themselves in midlife through health, Law of Attraction, and fashion. Did this evolve or were they always things you have been interested in?

When I was growing up, I never had any idea about Law of Attraction. I became interested in different philosophies in high school, but became really busy in my 20’s with children and life and didn’t take anything too seriously. I wasn’t religious and was somewhat bitter about it. I started to become more of a spiritual person in my 30’s and started reading things like Caroline Myss and Gary Zukav. I’m still not religious, but I do believe in what some people would call God. God is Love and Love is all that matters. Law of Attraction simply means that we attract what we think about. Thought is very hard to control and everyone deals with their thoughts on a daily basis. Ultimately, you get what you think about and you can create the life you desire.

I love your Midlife Comeback Plan (you can download it here). What do you think are the 3 big traps for women in midlife?

So many times, as women, we get very wrapped up in being caregivers and forget to take care of ourselves. When our children leave, or when we retire from careers, or whatever other changes go on in our lives, we are left wondering what to do with ourselves.

Another trap, I believe is getting wrapped up in the societal issues. Women in midlife, traditionally, haven’t been valued, but we have so much wisdom and so many things to offer. We are caught in the trappings of our lives as we age only we are longing for the freedom that we had when we were younger. Trappings of being carefree without the self-consciousness that comes with age and without the comparison that we feel as we become wiser and more interesting, yet older, and to society…less desirable.

What makes you want to get up on a soapbox and shout?

That age makes middle age women less desirable. Also, it saddens me that as women, we don’t always support each other. I don’t think there is any need for comparison or competition. We all have our issues and it’s important that we are there for each other.

What have you learnt about yourself creating Crazy Blonde Life?

I’m not sure that I always put into practice what I’ve learned, but it’s definitely that I can weather any storm. I know that going through storms is hard, but the sun comes out and we are better for having lived through them! I want to tell women that it’s ok to sit through the rain and the wind and then FEEL THE SUN ON YOUR FACE WHEN IT’S OVER!

Three things you can’t live without?

Can I be shallow here? I can’t live with a good Sancére, fabulous cheese, and coffee with cream. Also, #4 – I hate overhead lights, so I guess a good lamp with a 40 watt light bulb.

Three wardrobe essentials for any budget?

Definitely dark skinny jeans, a good quality white tee and black boots!

What advice would you give women on finding their style in midlife?

Wear what makes you feel beautiful, buy the best quality you can afford and don’t try to follow trends.

Words of wisdom you wish you knew when you were sixteen?

I wish I had known that I was valuable…that I was put here for a reason and most importantly that I have the power to create the life I desire!

What advice do you have for women who are experiencing unwanted change?

Everything that is happening in your life is something that you attracted for one reason or the other. You may not realize it, but your thoughts are powerful…if you desire something, ask for it and then let it go. The Universe (or God, whatever you want to call the higher power) will take it from there. Embrace the change and see what happens. Midlife is a time of change…everything that we’ve lived is different and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Re-invent yourself and follow your heart and your dreams. It’s never too late to create the life that you want!

Where would you like to take Crazy Blonde life in the near future?
